The British are strong on polite language. You will hear “ Please,” “ Thank you,” and “Sorry!” everywhere. Any service, however small, requires a “ Thank you” ----whatever you have just bought or paid for, whether it is a bus ticket, a trolleyful of groceries, a tankful of gas, or even a charity sticker when you have put some money in a donation box. And that is the end of it; the other person does not reply, as in the

“ Sorry” may be “the hardest word” for Elton John, but, in fact, it is one of the most widely used words among the British. Is this an example of British ultra-politeness, or just plain good manners? The British say, “Sorry!” almost involuntarily as an apology for any possible inconvenience or interruption for which he or she might feel responsible. They say, “Sorry!” or even “So sorry!” if they brush past somebody in the street, or touch somebody accidentally----invading somebody’s private space. They may even say “ Sorry” if somebody else treads on their toe (because their toe got in the way)! They say, “Sorry?” to signal the fact that they have not heard what someone has said, and to request repetition.(“Excuse me” is not normally used in any of these contexts, as it is in the U.S.A.----it is used to attract someone’s attention, or in politely, or sometimes less politely, asking the person addressed to move aside.)
